QA and PA are two different but complementary fields.
UNIDIA is involved in national and international flagship instrumentation projects in astronomy and astrophysics, such as CTA, Gaia and MOSAIC (ELT). These large-scale projects, which are set to revolutionize current knowledge in astronomy and astrophysics, place exacting demands on the instrument’s ability to meet the requirements initially defined. These projects are set up as part of international consortia, last an average of ten years, and are often installed at observation sites a long way from Europe. All these factors make it essential to set up Product Assurance (PA) activities in order, among other things, to control risks, identify and prevent failures, monitor subcontractors in order to guarantee the conformity of the instrument to the needs of the client, and minimize the impact of hazards throughout the development of the instruments.
As part of the pooling of technical resources at Paris Observatory, UNIDIA works for all the Observatory’s departments. In order to optimize its organization, control the repeatability of certain tasks and processes, and facilitate interfaces between its various activities, the unit has set up a Quality Management System as part of its Quality Assurance (QA). This transparently reflects the seriousness, expertise and professionalism of our teams, who are committed to ensuring the satisfaction of our customers, while handling all requests under the best possible conditions.
